Chemical and physical characterization of water- and dew-retted flax fibers

چکیده

The composition of dew-retted and water-retted flax fibers were evaluated by chemical and mass spectral analyses to determine their chemical differences. Phenolics, waxes, cutin, and carbohydrates were determined by gas liquid chromatography. Water-retted fibers contained more residual wax and lower arabinose content than the dew-retted and were finer and stronger. Pyrolysis mass spectrometric analysis differentiated waterand dew-retted fibers. Principal component analysis of the chemical data including both strength and fineness measurements produced a grouping of the water-retted samples distinct from the dew-retted fibers. Principal component analysis of the mass spectral data produced the same grouping based mass markers characteristic of the chemical components that were associated with the initial grouping with fineness and strength measurements. Pilot plant for processing flax fiber

A flax fiber pilot plant is needed to process small samples of flax straw into fibers to facilitate research on retting and fiber properties. Our objective was to develop and test a modular design for a flax processing pilot plant based on a commercial line that was capable of cleaning fiber and seed flax straw from unretted, dew-retted, and enzyme-retted samples. The USDA Flax Fiber Pilot Plan...

Comparative Evaluation of Physical and Structural Properties of Water Retted and Non-retted Flax Fibers

Flax stems of Modran variety were subjected to water retting under laboratory conditions and its physical properties were compared with non-retted fibers. Physical properties including percentage of impurities, weighted average length, linear density, tenacity and elongation were analyzed and the results were compared. The analysis of retted and non-retted flax fibers showed that retting is the...

Modifying Dew - Retted Flax Fibers by Means of an Air - Atomized Enzyme Treatment

The use of atomization or an aerosol formation is investigated as a vehicle for enzyme treatment of dew-retted flax fibers. A cellulase/endoglucanase from Trichoderma reesei is applied by atomization to dew-retted fibers at concentrations of 0. 50, and 100 U. Enzyme activity post-atomization is verified by GLC analyses of sugars hydrolyzed from the treated fibers. Cellulase treatment results in...

Ventilatory impairment from pre-harvest retted flax.

A new method of retting flax recently developed to suit the United Kingdom climate has allowed the reintroduction of flax growing to this country. The weed killer glyphosate is sprayed on the crop which then rets before harvesting six weeks later. The acute bronchoconstrictor responses of 11 normal subjects to dust from dew retted and from pre-harvest retted flaxes were compared in a double bli...

Optimization for enzyme-retting of flax with pectate lyase

Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) is an important commercial crop that supplies both linseed and bast fibers for multiple applications. Retting, which is a microbial process, separates industrially useful bast fibers from non-fiber stem tissues. While several methods (i.e., waterand dew-retting) are used to ret flax, more recently enzymes have been evaluated to replace methods used currently. Alkal...
